Overview
The hydraulic strut acts as both the spring and the shock absorber. The hydraulic fluid provides the damping control (and adjustable height and stiffness), while the nitrogen in the lower (accumulator) part of the strut acts as the spring.

In this Photo of front strut, the rubber cover is missing - they deteriorate over time especially if exposed to eg hydraulic fluid.
